Menfolk Journeys
This podcast explores how different men from all walks of life wear the beautiful and confusing mantle of manhood.
Men can be knuckleheads in public life. But in private, if given the right questions and if they feel comfortable, men can also be thoughtful, reflective, and have deep conversations about their lives, big questions, and meaningful ideas.
We have great conversations with men just like us and from all walks of life, so we can learn from their personal stories and all get better together.
Menfolk Journeys
20. Simon and A 21st Century Odyssey
Have you wandered? And if you did, did you get back home or to your own “North Star’?
I think the Homeric epic The Odyssey continues to be compelling, especially for menfolk, even after 2,700 years. The story of trying to get back home, but being detained, waylaid, having adventures, learning, and generally exploring various ways of living while maintaining a “North Star” is an apt metaphor.
We can have these wanderings in the real physical sense - true travel - or within our own minds per James Joyce.
My guest Simon did a bit of both. True physical wandering and significant career changes that have given him a complex, multi-faceted experience.
And, he could track his journeys with significant generational markers - 9/11, the capitalistic boom and retreat in China, Covid - which literally changed the trajectory of his next stages.
